LOFER - IN THE HEART OF THE SALZBURG SAALACHTAL VALLEY
Despite having the smallest surface area at just 55 km², Lofer is the most populous of the four Saalach Valley villages, with a population of approximately 2000. Thanks to this and its central location, it is at the heart of life in the valley.
You can enjoy hiking, biking, mountaineering, climbing, swimming and Nordic walking during your summer holiday in Lofer, or skiing, cross-country skiing, ski touring, tobogganing, winter hiking, and snowshoe tours during your winter holiday in Lofer - the region offers endless possibilities!
In the Lofer water world, however, there is also plenty going on. The Steinbergbad Lofer adventure complex awaits old and young alike with an adventure pool, white water rapid, and large family area. And if you don’t just fancy cooling off, grab an oar too. The Saalach also has plenty of challenges for kayakers and rafting fans.
It’s not just snow sports fans who visit us in winter, though - many holidaymakers come here simply to enjoy a stroll through the village and bit of window-shopping, to sample one of the local Saalach Valley delicacies in one of our inns and restaurants, or simply to soak up the romantic atmosphere.
INTERESTING SIGHTS NEAR LOFER
The pilgrim’s church of Maria Kirchental, also known as the “Pinzgau Cathedral”, is situated at an altitude of 900 metres in the heart of the Lofer Steinberg mountains. It is one of the most important destinations for pilgrims in the Salzburg region.
NATURAL FORCES IN THE SAALACHTAL VALLEY
At the foot of both the Lofer and Leogang mountain ranges in the Salzburg region, and at the foothills of the Steinern Meer (“Rocky Sea”) plateau, nature has created bizarrely-shaped rock formations, thunderous waterfalls and one of the largest cave systems in Europe in the smallest of spaces. Just two kilometres apart – embedded in the Pinzgau Saalach Valley – are three extraordinary natural wonders: the Vorderkaser gorge, the Lamprecht cave, and the Seisenberg gorge – better known collectively as the “Saalach Valley natural forces”. Enjoy free entry to both the Vorderkaser and Seisenberg gorges with your Saalach Valley summer card.
The natural attractions are directly accessible from Salzburg and Saalfelden via the main road (311), as well as by bike via the Tauern bike path.
LOFERER ALMENWELT - THE LOFER ALPINE MEADOW
The Loferer Almenwelt is a very popular destination for families. In summer and in winter, you will find rest, relaxation, sporting activities, and above all, lots of fun!
All sporting efforts are rewarded with stunning mountain views and delicious culinary treats in the mountain inns and huts.
TIP: Your Salzburg Saalachtal summer card entitles you to free travel on the Almbahn I + II gondolas, which transport you (and your bike) up to the Almenwelt - free of charge!
